The Castle of William the Conqueror

 

Built by William the Conqueror, the castle of Caen is, with a total surface area of 25ha, one of the most biggest castle in Europe.

Royal castle from 1204 to 1789, then military barracks until 1944, today the monument houses the Normandy museum and the Caen Fine Art's museum.

Some of the most beautiful areas of the castle have been restored recently, as the artillery terrace or the battlements.

Practical information

The castle is open every day of the year. Guided tours in July and Auguest (from tuesday to saturday, from 14:30 to 16:30).

Prices for guided tours: adults 5€, reduced rates 3€50, free for children under 10 years old.

Caen has many more wonders, as the Vaugueux neighbourhood, the historic center, the "Abbaye aux femmes", the "Abbaye aux hommes", the "Jardin des plantes", or the 'Hotel d'Escoville".
